Calming Kids Nervous for their Dental Appointment

When kids fear the dentist, it can be tough to get them to the dental office, and even tougher to calm them down during an appointment. At Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, we want all of our patients to be comfortable and even happy during our appointments. After all, good dental hygiene starts in childhood. Take some of these tips for calming a child about dental visits.

Kids feel more comfortable when they are familiar with something. The earlier you start bringing kids to the dentist, the more familiar kids are with the visits. Kids should start seeing the dentist when they grow in their first tooth, or by the age of one if that hasn’t happened yet.
For young kids who have never been to the dentist before or who do not remember going, you can play “pretend dental visit” with them at home to help them know how the appointment will go. Have them lean back in a recliner chair or a couch. Have them open wide and “examine” their teeth by counting each one. You can even use their toothbrush to “clean” their teeth. Explain that this is what the dentist will be doing during the appointment.

It also helps kids to know why they have to see the dentist. Educational videos or just a simple talk with your child can help them understand that the dentist makes their teeth healthy and strong. You can also teach them about cavities and why they are bad.

Help your kids look forward to dental visits! To schedule their next appointment at Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, call our office at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com.

  1. My son had a great fear of dentist visit. Last month took him forcefully to dentist Hermosa Beach for his cavity tooth pain. It was really tough for me to take him there, but after reaching there. The dentist treated him amazingly and did the treatment too. It was really good to see taking treatment calmly.
