Electric Toothbrush Apps

It’s an exciting time in the world of home dental products. Several manufacturers of electric toothbrushes have recently developed apps for mobile devices. We of Bishop & Bishop Dental thought our patients might want to know about how the new programs could help include their dental health.

A person must be brushing for two full minutes with a manual toothbrush to get the full effect. For people with disabilities, this may not be possible, and children often don’t have the necessary attention spans. Some of the new apps are designed to rectify these problems. Users can now receive feedback about which tooth surfaces they’re missing, whether they should adjust the toothbrush’s settings, and how much they have improved. Children receive the same information through mobile games but are encouraged to brush the full amount of time by progressing through the game by improving their brushing.

Electric toothbrushes are not a cheap investment. However, patients who have struggled with maintaining oral hygiene may find that fun and feedback were just what they needed.

David Bishop, DDS and Dorienne Taylor-Bishop, DDS, operate Bishop & Bishop Dental at 8830 Cameron St, #504, Silver Spring, Maryland, 20910. To set up an appointment, call 301-608-9270 or visit BishopDental.com and fill out a contact sheet.

Eliminate Plaque Before It Turns to Tartar

Have you ever licked your teeth and felt a “fuzzy” buildup? That fuzz you feel is a sticky, colorless film of bacteria that forms on teeth called plaque. Plaque develops when foods containing carbohydrates such as milk, soft drinks, and other food and beverages that are high in sugar and starches are frequently left on the teeth. If you don’t practice proper oral hygiene on a daily basis to remove this residue, the plaque will harden into tartar, which only Dr. David Bishop of Bishop & Bishop Dental will be able to remove.

Everyone develops plaque because bacteria are constantly forming in our mouths. Plaque that is not removed from around the gum line can cause inflammation and irritation to the gums around your teeth. If you’re not sure if you see some plaque on your teeth, all you have to do is scratch the enamel with your fingernail. If residue appears, go grab your toothbrush. It’s important to brush your teeth twice a day, using a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste to remove plaque from tooth surfaces and protect your teeth from decay.

Patient Anxiety

It is one thing for anxiety to affect your daily relationships, but when it starts to impact your overall health then it becomes a problem. Dental anxiety, or dental phobia, is much more serious than just getting sweaty palms and having sleepless nights before an appointment – it’s a paralyzing fear of dentists or dental treatment. Luckily, Dr. David Bishop at Bishop & Bishop Dental has the tools, techniques and gentle touch to help make regular dental visits as comfortable as possible for you.

The key to coping with dental anxiety is to discuss your fears with your dentist. Once your dentist knows what your fears are, he or she will better be able to work with you to determine the best ways to make you less anxious and more relaxed. In addition, ask your dentist what’s happening at every stage of the procedure. This way you can mentally prepare for what’s to come.

If you suffer from dental anxiety, let us know when scheduling your next dental appointment so we can ease your fear. Decayed Wisdom Teeth

As we age, we acquire wisdom, as well as wisdom teeth. Wisdom teeth appear between the ages of 17-21 and are known as the third set of molars. When they erupt correctly, healthy wisdom teeth can help you chomp your food a little faster.  However, if they start to cause you pain and discomfort, this can lead to infection and you may need to schedule a consultation with Dr. David Bishop of Bishop & Bishop Dental to discuss extraction.

If you bite on a piece of food that is too hard or you experience a mouth injury, wisdom teeth may become troublesome. They can also become cracked, broken, and decayed. Decay can form on any tooth surface, but when the decay begins to attack the wisdom teeth, depending on the position of the tooth it becomes difficult to clean. Depending on the individual case, Dr. David Bishop may be able to fill the tooth, but even in cases where a filling could be successfully placed, if the wisdom tooth cannot be adequately maintained, recurrent decay can occur. Though many patients tend to procrastinate through the process, extraction is always best to avoid infection.

If your wisdom teeth are still intact and you have questions about removal, please give us a call. Bruxism Causes and Treatment

Do you ever wake up from a night’s sleep with sore teeth and jaws? You could be grinding your teeth. The medical term for occasional teeth grinding is called bruxism and although this condition does not usually cause harm, when teeth grinding occurs on a regular basis the teeth can be damaged and other oral health complications can arise. At Bishop & Bishop Dental, we offer night guards to prevent this from happening and to provide you with relief.

Stress, anxiety, smoking, heavy alcohol, caffeine, depression and sleep disorders are all possible causes of teeth grinding. Treatment for teeth grinding depends on the cause. In some cases, chronic teeth grinding can result in fracturing, loosening or loss of teeth. The purpose of a night guard is to protect your teeth and jaws. At Bishop & Bishop Dental, if you require a night guard we will custom make them just for you.

If you suspect that you are suffering from bruxism, give us a call. To learn more about the services we provide at our practice, visit www.bishopdental.com for more information. How to Keep Tooth Enamel Strong

Tooth enamel is the hard outer surface layer of your teeth that serves to protect against tooth decay. In fact, tooth enamel is considered the hardest mineral substance in your body, even stronger than bone. At Bishop & Bishop Dental, Dr. David Bishop wants your enamel to be as strong as the rest of the bones in your body and you can keep it that way by following these simple steps:
  • Limit sugary foods and drinks – bacteria in your mouth feed on sugar from foods and drinks. They produce acids, which soften and wear away your enamel. Chewy candies that stick on your teeth can also cause damage.
  • Eat foods that protect enamel – calcium in food counters acids in your mouth that cause decay. It also helps keep your bones and teeth strong. Milk, cheese, and other dairy products help protect and strengthen enamel. If you don’t eat dairy, look for foods with calcium added.
  • Avoid over-brushing – You can actually wear down your enamel if you brush too fast and hard. Wait for up to an hour after eating sweets or citrus fruits before you brush your teeth.
  • Use fluoride – Fluoride is nature’s cavity fighter because it strengthens your enamel and helps repair the early stages of tooth decay. Using a fluoride toothpaste or mouthwash can help prevent cavities and keep your enamel strong.

How to Prevent Tooth Decay

Tooth decay is the destruction of your tooth enamel, the hard, outer layer of your teeth. Hundreds of different types of bacteria live on our teeth, gums, tongue and other crevices in the mouth. Some are helpful, but some can be harmful such as those that play a role in the tooth decay process. At Bishop & Bishop Dental, we want our patients to know that good oral and dental hygiene can help you avoid cavities and tooth decay.

When a tooth is exposed to acid frequently – for example, if you frequently eat foods or drinks containing sugar and starches – the repeated cycles of acid attacks cause the enamel to continue to lose minerals. This will cause a white spot to appear if the minerals have been lost. When this happens, this is a sign of early decay.
You can help prevent tooth decay by following these tips:
  • Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste.
  • Clean between your teeth daily with floss or an interdental cleaner.
  • Eat nutritious and balanced meals and limit snacking.
  • Visit us for professional cleanings and oral examination.

Dental Bonding for Perfected Smiles

A smile is very important to a person’s confidence and self-esteem. Small dental imperfections can make a big difference. Fortunately, there is a simple and affordable restoration option for many dental imperfections. Dental bonding is able to improve the look of many issues and is something we offer here at Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD.

Dental bonding is the process of using a composite resin to smooth over imperfections. The resin may be chosen in the shade that matches your tooth so that the improvement is not noticeable in your smile. In the case of whitening purposes, the resin will be chosen in a shade that is brighter than your current shade. The restoration will blend in with the rest of your teeth. For cracks, chips, misaligned teeth, gaps, and more, the resin is smoothed over the imperfection to complete a more aesthetically-pleasing look. When the resin is shaped accordingly, a curing light is used to harden the resin. The tooth is then polished so that it shines like natural teeth. Preparation for the tooth is minimal, light etching is all that is needed.

With great dental care, dental bonding can last for over ten years. To set up an appointment at Bishop & Bishop Dental of Silver Spring, MD, call our office at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com.

What Are the Signs of Needing a Root Canal?

Root canals are routine procedures that can save the life of a tooth. At Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Springs, MD, we pride ourselves on patient education. Keep reading to learn more about the root canal procedure.

Root canal therapy is necessary to clear out an infected tooth so it can heal and function healthily again. Signs of an infected tooth include pain, sensitivity, a dark spot on the tooth, and sore on the gum tissue near the tooth.

To begin the root canal process, your dentist will first drill an access hole into the tooth. A flexible file is inserted into the tooth with an electric drill. The decayed dental pulp is cleared out and the root canal is scrubbed clean. A sealant called gutta-percha will then be applied to fill the empty space. Finally, a filling will be placed on the access hole. The tooth is now decay-free and nerves that were once irritated have been removed. The tooth can now heal from any damage caused from the infection.

A tooth infection can cause pain, the loss of the tooth, and a spread of the infection. If you are showing signs of a tooth infection, do not wait to make your appointment here in our Silver Spring, MD office. To schedule, call Bishop & Bishop Dental at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com.

How a Tooth is Extracted

When teeth become problematic to the point where they are hurting your health, it is sometimes the best option to extract them. Here at Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, we perform extractions for patients whose teeth are compromising their health. While it is ideal to keep your real teeth intact, extraction is better than a dangerous infection.

Depending on the complexity of the extraction, a local anesthetic or a general anesthesia may be used. It will depend on how many teeth are being extracted and if they are impacted or not. Since many wisdom teeth are impacted, incisions must be made to the gums. Bone tissue may also need to be removed. Once the tooth is able to be accessed, forceps are used to rock the tooth back and forth until it is loose enough to be removed. Sometimes the tooth will need to be broken up into more than one piece before the whole thing is removed. Afterward, the area will be cleaned and stitched up, if stitches are necessary.

If you are in need of an extraction, be sure to follow up with our care instructions. To set up an appointment at Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, call our office at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com

Understanding the Actions of Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, commonly known as laughing gas, is a chemical compound with the formula N20. At room temperature, it is a colorless, non-flammable gas, with a slightly sweet odor and taste. Nitrous oxide is a safe and effective sedative agent that is mixed with oxygen and inhaled through a small mask that fits over your nose to help you relax. At Bishop & Bishop Dental, Dr. David Bishop only administers this pain-relieving formula to eligible patients.

Nitrous oxide is the most commonly used form of sedation in dentistry. It is administered by having the patient inhale the gas, which is carefully monitored by Dr. David Bishop. You will fall into a euphoric state and feel completely relaxed. All feelings of fear and anxiety fade away, leaving you to sit back peacefully while your dental procedure is performed. In most cases, all dental work can be completed in one visit while you are sedated. Once the procedure is over, the nitrous oxide will wear off fairly quickly and you will probably be able to drive yourself home and return to your daily activities.

You will need to have a preliminary visit with your dentist to make sure that you are an eligible candidate for nitrous sedation. What Are Veneers Good For?

Dental imperfections can be frustrating when you look in the mirror or see yourself in a picture. However, they are able to be corrected. Here at Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, we are able to fix almost any type of dental imperfection with dental veneers.

Dental veneers provide a straight, white, beautiful smile without having to work on your actual teeth. Veneers are ceramic shells that fit right over your existing teeth. They can instantly fix the look of misaligned, misshapen, or discolored teeth, among many other tissues. For patients who are looking for a long-lasting white smile, veneers are great because they are stain-resistant.

To begin the process of attaching veneers, a thin layer of enamel will be taken off the teeth which is approximately the thickness of a veneer. An impression will then be taken of the teeth to send to a dental laboratory. The dental lab will create completely custom veneers. During the time the veneers are being created, temporary veneers will need to be worn. When ready, the permanent veneers are attached and fitted for correct bite and use. When taken good care of, veneers can last up to ten years.

If you are unhappy with your smile and want to improve this, veneers may be the perfect solution. To schedule an appointment with Bishop & Bishop Dental of Silver Spring, MD, call our office at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com.

Selecting a Mouthwash to Meet Your Needs

Mouthwash or rinses are used for a variety of reasons: to freshen breath, to help prevent or control tooth decay, to reduce plaque, to prevent or reduce gingivitis, to reduce the speed that tartar forms on the teeth, or to produce a combination of these effects.  Mouthwash has a few beneficial properties and with Dr. David Bishop at Bishop & Bishop Dental would like to explain some of them.
  • Antimicrobial agents act directly on oral bacteria to help reduce plaque, decrease the severity of gingivitis and control bad breath.
  • Fluoride helps reduce tiny lesions (tooth decay) on tooth enamel and make teeth more resistant to decay.
  • Astringent salts can serve as temporary deodorizers that mask bad breath.
  • Odor neutralizers act by chemically inactivating odor causing compounds.

Calming Kids Nervous for their Dental Appointment

When kids fear the dentist, it can be tough to get them to the dental office, and even tougher to calm them down during an appointment. At Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, we want all of our patients to be comfortable and even happy during our appointments. After all, good dental hygiene starts in childhood. Take some of these tips for calming a child about dental visits.

Kids feel more comfortable when they are familiar with something. The earlier you start bringing kids to the dentist, the more familiar kids are with the visits. Kids should start seeing the dentist when they grow in their first tooth, or by the age of one if that hasn’t happened yet.
For young kids who have never been to the dentist before or who do not remember going, you can play “pretend dental visit” with them at home to help them know how the appointment will go. Have them lean back in a recliner chair or a couch. Have them open wide and “examine” their teeth by counting each one. You can even use their toothbrush to “clean” their teeth. Explain that this is what the dentist will be doing during the appointment.

It also helps kids to know why they have to see the dentist. Educational videos or just a simple talk with your child can help them understand that the dentist makes their teeth healthy and strong. You can also teach them about cavities and why they are bad.

Help your kids look forward to dental visits! To schedule their next appointment at Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, call our office at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com.

How Smoking Affects Oral Health

Smoking is terrible for oral health. It should come as no surprise, as smoking is terrible for many different health reasons. Here at Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, we want our patients to know just what happens to the mouth of a smoker.

Smoking can affect both the teeth and gums dramatically. The gum tissue and the blood vessels within them begin to change. The top layer of gum tissue thickens; a condition called keratosis. The blood vessels become constricted, which limits blood supply to the area. The salivary glands also become damaged, which creates a dry mouth. These types of conditions affect healing, immune strength, and promote an environment for bacterial growth.

Increased bacteria lead to more plaque build-up which can lead to gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease can lead to loss of teeth and infections. The risk of infections is also greater since the immune strength is lowered. Smoking also stains breath and darkens teeth.
The worst effect of any is that smoking causes cancer. Cancerous lesions can form on the gums, the lips, the throat, the tongue, and other areas of the mouth.

Oral health and education are of the utmost importance to us here. To schedule your next appointment with Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, call us at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com.

Electric vs Manual Toothbrush

Here at Bishop & Bishop Dental, Dr. David Bishop isn’t picky about what type of toothbrush you use because the important thing is that you are brushing your teeth correctly. However, we thought we would tell explain how brushing your teeth with an electric toothbrush compared to manual brushing.

It’s possible to brush your teeth effectively with a manual toothbrush. However, an electric toothbrush can be a great alternative to a manual one, especially if you have arthritis or other conditions that make it difficult to brush well. Although almost any toothbrush can do an effective job, research suggests there is one electronic toothbrush bristle configuration that seems to be better at removing plaque and preventing gum disease.

If you choose an electric toothbrush, make sure the toothbrush is comfortable to hold and easy to use. It’s important to remember that the purpose of a toothbrush is to remove plaque and to stimulate the gums to prevent tooth decay and gum disease. Whether you choose an electric toothbrush or a manual one, remember that what’s most important is daily brushing and flossing.

Gestational Sleep Apnea

Pregnancy can bring about many changes, including changes in dental health. One serious change that can affect one to ten percent of pregnant women is sleep apnea. At Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, we treat sleep apnea, a condition that should not be ignored.

It is thought that between one and ten percent of pregnant woman develop what is called gestational sleep apnea.  Because some of the changes pregnancy may bring include weight gain and the congestion of mucous membranes in the upper airway, obstructive sleep apnea can develop into a problem when it wasn’t one before. It is important to note that pregnancy is different for everyone and it does not always result in these changes, nor do these changes always result in sleep apnea. However, sleep apnea is a dangerous condition that should be treated.

The risks of obstructive sleep apnea include hypertension, heart attack, heart failure, liver problems, and excessive daytime fatigue, among other health issues. In addition, gestational sleep apnea is sometimes linked to gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, and high blood pressure. These conditions can lead to preterm delivery, low birth weight, and can be life-threatening for both the mother and the baby.

If you are pregnant and showing signs of sleep apnea, it is important to be evaluated and treated. To schedule an appointment with Bishop & Bishop Dental in Silver Spring, MD, call our office at (301) 608-9270 or visit our website, www.bishopdental.com.

Soft Foods for TMJ/TMD

TMJ or Temporomandibular Joint Disorder is a pain or malfunction at the point where the jawbone is attached. TMJ can have many symptoms, from clicking, to locking of the jaw, to a headache, earache, or even a feeling of tiredness in the face. Because TMJ affects the chewing muscles, the condition may worsen when eating certain foods. Here at Bishop & Bishop Dental, our doctor can not only treat TMJ disorder, but he can suggest diet changes that can alleviate symptoms.

We know that giving up certain foods is easier said than done, but you may need to try eliminating certain culprits from your diet if this decreases your problems with TMJ. To lessen pain and other symptoms associated with this condition, avoid eating hard foods, crunchy foods, and thick or large foods that involve opening your mouth wide when you chew them. You may also want to eliminate fatty foods that require a lot of chewing. Some good foods to eat include cooked vegetables and fruits, cottage cheese, mashed potatoes and scrambled eggs. By incorporating soft foods into your diet you are giving your jaw and temporomandibular joints the opportunity to rest and heal.

If you experience pain in your jaw, please give us a call to discuss your treatment options. Choosing a Toothpaste That’s Right for You

When stepping foot into the oral hygiene aisle at the drugstore, our staff at Bishop & Bishop Dental understand that the selections of toothpaste can be overwhelming. Should you go for tartar control, fluoride, sensitive or whitening toothpaste? When it comes to choosing the toothpaste that is best for you, it’s important to consider your unique oral health needs. The best way to discover what those are is by scheduling an oral exam with Dr. David Bishop. In the meantime, here are some options to consider while browsing:
  • Anti-cavity: This type of toothpaste contains fluoride. Fluoride plays an active role in preventing decay, and it actively strengthens tooth enamel.
  • Anti-gingivitis: If you spit blood in the sink, this is an early sign of gingivitis, a mild form of gum disease. Anti-gingivitis toothpaste helps reduce oral bacteria and can be very effective at stopping gingivitis in its tracks.
  • Desensitizing: If you’ve ever bit into an ice cream cone and felt a sharp pain in your tooth’s nerve, this type of toothpaste will provide relief by blocking the tooth’s pain signal to the nerve.
  • Tartar-control: This toothpaste does exact what it says, however, the best way to remove tartar is by scheduling a professional dental cleaning with one of our doctors.
  • Whitening: This toothpaste contains chemicals that are able to help maintain the natural color of your teeth.

Handling Common Dental Emergencies

Any dental emergency like an injury to the teeth or gums can be potentially serious and should not be ignored. If left untreated, your risk of permanent damage as well as the need for expensive treatment in the future may increase. When you have a dental emergency it’s important to visit us at Bishop & Bishop Dental as soon as possible. In the meantime, here are some tips for handling common dental emergencies.
  • For a knocked-out permanent or adult tooth, keep it moist at all times. If you can, try placing the tooth back in the socket without touching the root. If that’s not possible, place it between your cheek and gums, or use a tooth preservation product that has the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance.
  • For a cracked tooth, immediately rinse the mouth with warm water to clean the area.
  • If you bite your tongue or lip, clean the area gently with water and apply a cold compress.
  • For toothaches, rinse the mouth with warm water to clean it out. Gently use dental floss to remove any food caught between teeth.
